Project managers often find themselves in a position of responsibility without control. They don’t own the resources or the budget, have little or no influence over scope and timeframe, and all of that subject to change midstream with the winds of politics and economics.

PM literature is filled with advice on how build or influence teams, display leadership, encourage team work, resolve issues, manage risk, manage difficult people, manage meetings, how to report status….

This will be a little different. First let’s talk about how to get control of the politics. Then we’ll talk about the other essential components of a project and how to control them.
