Risk Management

Risk Management takes participants through the risk management process including valuable tools for each step within the process: planning, identification, qualification, quantification, response development and response control. Participants learn the value of adhering to the process and pursuing risk management in a cohesive, orderly fashion. Through hands-on case practice, the course examines the need for in-depth, comprehensive risk identification, and explores the tools and practices essential to identifying the critical risk issues and developing responses to deal with those issues. Risk Management also explores the opportunities for to build risk strategies that span multiple risks. As an element of this program, participants will examine the need for metric evaluation of qualified risks, and the importance such evaluations can have in long-term planning.

Publication: Risk Management - Concepts and Guidance
Author: Carl L. Pritchard, PMP, PMI-RMP
Edition: 2010. Fourth Edition. Softcover. 448 pages
Risk is a future phenomenon. As part of our eternal quest to control some small component of our future, it is the focus of many business discussions, thus making it an essential part of our decision making. The challenge comes in creating a degree of consistency in managing risk and the risk process. In his revised fourth edition of Risk Management: Concepts and Guidance, Carl L. Pritchard, PMP, again addresses this challenge expertly. This comprehensive edition views risk in light of current information, all the while remaining grounded in the history of risk practice. Risk Management has been updated to reflect the Project Management Institute, Inc.’s PMBOK® Guide, Fourth Edition. The emphasis is now toward greater clarity on risk practice from a pragmatic perspective.

Risk Management uses a holistic approach, examining risk as a blend of environmental, programmatic, and situational concerns. As a reference volume, it is an encyclopedia of risk management tools, practices and protocols. Its 35 tool-packed chapters cover the latest perspectives, focusing on a systematic approach to risk management. It highlights specific techniques to enhance organizational risk identification, assessment and management, all within the project and program environments. This book is a must-have project management tool for gaining a higher-level perspective on risk management and enhancing organizational risk identification, assessment, and management!

Using Thinking Styles to Improve Project Team Performance

Project managers can no longer be experts at project theory and methodology alone. To be truly successful as a project leader, you need to build high performing teams. In addition to moving teams through the phased of the Project Management process, you need to be able to ensure the movement through the four stages of team development – Forming, Storming, Norming and Performing. Having tools designed to build knowledge about individual preferences is a great way to move quickly through the early stages and into performance.

This 45-minute session will be highly interactive. You will have the opportunity to identify your own thinking style and gain valuable knowledge about other styles. The facilitator will insight into how to improve communication between styles and give you a way to identify any particular challenges your project teams could have based upon the ‘thinking diversity’ of the group.

Topics to be addressed:
  • Thinking Styles identification
  • The four thinking styles
  • Project team strengths and challenges based on ‘thinking diversity’

The Westchester Chapter of PMI is pleased to announce another PMP Exam Preparation course, which will assist the PMP Certification candidate in preparing for the PMP Exam, the four-hour exam required for this valuable globally-recognized credential. This course will be offered on the campus of Iona College in New Rochelle, NY. The nine four-hour sessions will be conducted on Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. through noon, starting on 2/26/11 and ending on 5/7/11 (skipping 3/12/11 and 4/23/11, as the Iona College campus is closed on those days). Instructor-led lecture will present the subject matter as documented in the PMBOK and as tested by PMI in the PMP Exam. The instructor will also facilitate 'in-class' practice exams, as well as guide students in the use of the Velociteach InSite 'on-line' study aid and practice testing facility. The exam passing rate for students attending PMI Westchester Chapter courses is excellent, and we are proud of the hard work and success of our students. It will be possible to earn 36 education credits with the completion of all class requirements (credits toward the 35 training hours required for the PMP Certification).

This helps students determine their readiness to sit for the exam. Some materials are provided, light dinners are included, and weekly home work assignments are mandatory. Class size will vary, but a minimum of 8 students is needed to begin a class. Our success rates over the past 6 years have been excellent - over 96%.

Creating Resilience: Complex Adaptive Teams

Chaos Theory and its successor Complexity Theory have developed over the last two decades and have been applied to a range of disciplines. It was first popularized with the Butterfly Effect: small events can have big impacts. It provides a very practical lens to bring to your projects and organizations. This talk focuses on how to use simple project structures to cause breakthroughs and avoid catastrophes in modern, complex environments.

We will discuss concepts such as disequilibrium, adaptive leadership, nonlinearity and self-organizing teams. Special attention will be paid to the power of language on project teams.

The goal of this talk is not to leave you with some new buzzwords, but rather to provide new opportunities to take action and several new tools that can be quickly deployed on your projects.

10 Troublesome Project Management Ideas - and How to Combat Them!

Project managers often find themselves on the wrong end of a lot of misconceptions about project management. This session will deal with ten of these misconceptions and explain the potential danger or exposure that these ideas contain. Case studies and examples will be used to illustrate the ideas and recommendations will be made on how to combat these ideas should they creep into, or affect, your project.

The objective of this presentation is to help working project managers and teams:

  • Recognize when a project stakeholder has a potentially bothersome idea regarding a project.
  • Combat dangerous ideas and assumptions about project management, and choose tactics to re-educate stakeholders.
  • Discover methods for engaging project stakeholders, and setting appropriate expectations for the project

Agile: Tough Questions Answered

“Agile: Tough Questions Answered”, is an overview of Agile project management methodology and a hard look at some of the concerns about Agile including budget and re-structuring.

Synopsis: Oftentimes, “Agile” is used as an umbrella term for new methodology. In this presentation, you will learn about what “Agile” really means in project management- what its strength is, why it is so popular, where and why it is used. This speaker will focus on the mechanics of empirical process control and how it enables a higher degree of management, better long-term planning capabilities, improved team efficiency and improved alignment between results and the business goals of the product. The speaker will also compare the difference of Agile with traditional project management techniques and talk about how to implement of Agile in the workplace.

Speaker: Mark C. Layton, MBA, SCPM, CSM, PMP, Founder, Platinum Edge, Inc

Mark C. Layton is an organizational strategist and PMI certification instructor with over 20 years in the project/program management field. He is the Los Angeles chair for the Agile Project Leadership Network and is the founder of Platinum Edge, Inc. — an organizational improvement company that supports businesses making the Waterfall-to-Agile transition.

Prior to founding Platinum Edge in 2001, Mark developed his expertise as a consulting firm executive, program management coach, and in-the-trenches project leader. He also spent 11 years as a Cryptographic Specialist for the US Air Force, where he earned both Commendation and Achievement medals for his accomplishments.

Mark holds MBAs from the University of California, Los Angeles, and the National University of Singapore; a B.Sc. (summa cum laude) in Behavioral Science from Pitzer College/University of La Verne; and an A.S. in Electronic Systems from the Air Force’s Air College. He is also a Distinguished Graduate of the Air Force’s Leadership School, a Certified ScrumMaster, a Certified Scrum Professional, and a certified SCPM (Stanford University Advanced Project Management).

When he isn’t partnering with businesses to improve ROI, Mark enjoys scuba diving, international travel and endurance cycling. He is the author of Wiley & Sons “Agile Project Management for Dummies” series (March 2011) and is a frequent speaker on Lean, Scrum and other agile solutions.

PMP Exam Preparation Study Series

PMI Westchester is pleased to offer a PMP exam preparation study group to further assist you in taking your PMP exam. This program requires a 6-week commitment. If you are almost ready to sit for your exam, or just need a bit more study incentive, this is the group for you! It is fast-paced and informal. An up-front baseline exam is required along with a final exam. (A passing grade is required to receive educational credits for this class.) During class we review hundreds of sample questions. This helps students determine their readiness to sit for the exam. Some materials are provided, light dinners are included, and weekly homework assignments are mandatory. Class size will vary, but a minimum of 8 students is needed to begin a class. Our success rates over the past 6 years have been excellent - over 96%.

Prerequisites: Students must provide their own copy of the PMI Body of Knowledge (PMBOK), 4th edition, ISBN# 1933890517. It is also recommended that you purchase the PMP Exam Prep book by Rita Mulcahy, 6th edition, ISBN# 978-1-932735-18-5. Amazon.com offers both books at a discounted price.
