Conflict Management - Applying Mindfulness and Dialogue to Achieve Win-Win Results

Conflict is a fact of project life. In fact, if you are on a project without any, be afraid. We must be able to manage conflict in a way that is both personally satisfying and effective in achieving project and organizational objectives. This session teaches you how to enhance your ability to ‘step back’ so that you can avoid the reactive, emotion-driven behavior that leads to poor results both in terms of specific resolutions and the health of ongoing relationships. We go beyond the well-known conflict management models to practical techniques and concepts that enable win-win resolutions even in zero-sum situations where there must be a winner and loser.

Speaker: George Pitagorsky, PMP, Founder & Principal, Pitagorsky Consulting

George Pitagorsky, PMP, is a master of process. He has advised global enterprises on the implementation and improvement of project management practices and methodologies. He has extensive experience in the creation and implementation of process improvements in financial, manufacturing and consulting environments.

As a natural facilitator, George engages others in dialogue, learning, planning and decision making to promote consensus and teamwork among technical, non-technical, management, executive and other performers.

George is an expert in learning and development, and in the implementation of knowledge management tools, including a global training provider’s UPMM™, PM Competency Model and Project Management Basics™ products. He believes that the integration of process, effective communication, relationship skills and knowledge and resource management provides the organizational edge for success.

Lord of the Flies...or not
Managing Groups and Individuals Under Stress

Remember Lord of the Flies?

That is a story of a group under great anxiety and stress spinning out of control. Why? Why do some teams thrive and develop under great stress, while others disintegrate into a dysfunctional mess? Each year it seems that project teams are faced with bigger challenges, more uncertainty, and quickly changing conditions. Agility is important in the management of projects, and agility is also critical in managing individual and team reactions to the associated stress of major change. Each individual has a unique reaction to stress, and teams also develop their own reaction to stress. Project managers can prepare and shape how their teams will react to anxiety and stress, helping to prevent dysfunction and failure. In this short session we will gain an understanding of the stress response in individuals and teams and how project managers can work to ensure that their teams will successfully navigate change, anxiety and stress.

Objectives:

  • Explore the stress response in individuals to gain understanding of our own and other’s reactions to change, anxiety and stress. Jung’s theory of personality, through the MBTI, will be used as the construct to understand our different responses to stress. Attendees will not be given the MBTI, instead a general understanding of how and why people respond to stress differently will be addressed.
  • Provide insight and tips to project managers on how they can identify and address stress in project team members.
  • Explore how groups respond very differently to stress and the factors that determine whether a functional or dysfunctional team response will occur. Groups under stress have their own unique psychological response to stress. W.R. Bion’s and Larry Hirschorn’s theories and research on the psychodynamics of groups under stress will inform the understanding and pragmatic steps that project managers can take to productively manage stress in teams.
  • Provide guidance to project managers on how they can prepare project teams for the stress associated with radical change and how project managers can successfully manage teams under great stress to achieve successful outcomes.

"The Tools Less Taken"

Traditional development plans for the career project manager focus on certifications, domain expertise, and experience with planning tools and PMBOK knowledge. While these are excellent and necessary avenues of development there are other paths available to develop the component skills a project manager needs to be truly effective in his or her role. In this presentation, a variety of untraditional but widely-available supplemental development experiences will be presented that that can broaden project managers' skills in areas such as communication, planning, and other essential areas of practice.

Building the First "Steamship" in History

In 1807, a brilliant, creative, and controversial American by the name of Robert Fulton declared his intent to build an experimental “steamboat,” which would be used to initiate a continuous passenger service between New York City and Albany, New York. With the success of his North River Steam Boat, Fulton showed that it was possible to alter artificially both a person’s location and the amount of time it took to change it. In so doing, he also broke through the enormous psychological barrier that had existed in people’s minds; it was, in fact, possible to overcome Nature to practical effect.

It took time for many people to accept Robert Fulton’s triumph as the truth. One man who did not need to be convinced was a sloop captain named Moses Rogers. He had witnessed the first successful runs of the North River Steam Boat to Albany, and the experience gave him the fever—steamboat fever. Moses soon became one of the first steamboat captains in history, taking command of one of Fulton’s first rivals, the Phoenix. In his new profession, Moses learned not only the technicalities of this new technology, but the peculiarities of a traveling public just getting used to this new mode of transport.

In the years immediately following Fulton's triumph, running these steamboats on rivers, lakes and bays became a normal and accepted part of American life. But taking such a vessel on a voyage across the ocean was a different proposition altogether. Experienced mariners didn’t think it could be done. These early steamboats, they declared, were just too flimsy and unwieldy to withstand the dangers of the deep. But Moses believed otherwise. Combining his knowledge of the old mode of transport—sail—with the new mode of transport—steam—he set out to design a vessel that was capable of overcoming the many dangers of the sea. This craft would be not a steamboat, but a steamship, the first of its kind.

This presentation will show how Captain Rogers employed a variety of project management techniques to successfully complete this revolutionary vessel...nearly two centuries ago!

Speaker: John Laurence Busch

John Laurence Busch is an independent historian who has devoted years of research to discovering the true story of Captain Moses Rogers and the steamship Savannah.

This led him to scour archives and libraries from Portland, Maine to Savannah, Georgia, and across the Atlantic Ocean to the far reaches of Europe, to piece together the life and career of Moses Rogers, as well as the actors and events that resulted in the formation of the Savannah Steam Ship Company, and the construction of the steamship Savannah.

The result is STEAM COFFIN, the most descriptive account of the saga of Captain Moses Rogers and the steamship Savannah ever written. The foundation for such a story rests upon the contents of never-before-published manuscripts and newspaper articles, which provide an abundance of new details illuminating the actions and attitudes of those who participated in, and witnessed, the creation and voyage of the Savannah. John’s careful weaving together of many disparate sources results in a narrative that recalls both the fabric and style used in storytellings of old. It also shows just what Captain Moses Rogers and the steamship Savannah accomplished for eternity.

STEAM COFFIN has received positive reviews from 25 periodicals in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia. John has made over 200 presentations on Captain Rogers and the Savannah to a wide variety of audiences, from Maine to Georgia to Montana, and across the Atlantic to Europe.

Professional Development Day: The Power of Project Management

The Power of Project Management: Managing Beyond the Silos

Complex tasks and a large number of people are two unavoidable elements of most organizations. Organizing through departmentalization of businesses by function and creating respective lines of authority is one of the most common approaches to keep forces strategically aligned. People know where they belong, who to take direction from, and what is expected of them. This arrangement has great advantages but creates one big challenge - siloed groups. Project management as a profession probably suffers the most from this challenge, as most projects are expected to cross those functional boundaries.

We welcome you to spend a day with us to understand how we can manage beyond silos and make the desired business impact through successful project executions. Our expert and award-winning speakers strive to offer nothing less than practical and actionable advice and tools that you could use the next day..

Project Origination: How Project Managers can Prevent the Next Arch Deluxe

Popular thinking tends to believe that the most critical phase in determining the success of a project is Project Planning. This session will challenge this belief and provide real life examples of costly product failures which will demonstrate how Project Managers can make their most critical contributions even before the project begins. The best managed project in the world will not provide value to an organization that has selected the wrong project to undertake. This session explains how we can improve the success of our projects during Project Origination by understanding: Recent product failures, The Egg Theory and How Wal-Mart drives prices lower.

Agile in Practice - The Real World

Nowadays, learning about a new idea, framework, or process enhancement is as easy as looking it up on Google, watching an online video, or posting a question in an online forum. But none of these would be sufficient to answer your questions or address the challenges of actually implementing the new idea, framework, or process change.

This presentation has two goals. First, to demonstrate the tools and techniques that are used in Agile projects in the “Real World”. To accomplish this we will roll up our sleeves, participate in a planning session, acquire a team, schedule a sprint, and deliver a potentially shippable product, all in less than an hour! Our second objective is to arm the audience with the pros & cons of implementing SCRUM in their workplace. For this, we will review what works and what doesn't: how to introduce Agile topics in your organizations if they're already Agile, or are planning to be in the future.

Speaker: Stanley Ioffe, PMP, PMI-ACP, CSM

Stanley Ioffe has over 15 years of hands-on experience with software development projects, in both waterfall and Agile environments, across a variety of roles including development, business analysis, testing and quality assurance, and project and product management. He has spent the last seven years implementing and coaching Agile teams in various business sectors including financial services and Internet marketing. His most recent project being with the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium where he serves as an Agile Product Owner. Stanley also serves a Technical Advisor and a Sr. Project Manager at the Rondo Young Artist Festival, and is a proud member of the Westchester PMI Chapter.

Practicing the Art of Networking

Speaker: Bill Cusano, creator of Cusano Marketing - The Story Store

Bill Cusano, creator of Cusano Marketing - The Story Store, lost his job in 2007. Suddenly his time was his own. Immediately, he changed his daily routine, beginning with something inspiring and motivating. His approach was simply to focus one hour a day on whatever he wanted. Today, that hour has grown into a business and a vocation. He took his loves of video production, meeting new people, writing, studying, and building teams, and developed a marketing business around his lifestyle. He has a growing list of clients for whom he creates videos, formats books for publication, and manages content for websites and mailings. Bill is well respected for his generosity in effectively sharing how practicing the Art of Networking can positively impact our careers.
