PMI NYC 2011 Professional Development Day

The business world is constantly evolving -- as is Project Management. From Six Sigma to Agile, processes and methodologies have become as diverse as the fields that employ project managers.

Over the past decade, we have seen a transformation in the role of a project manager. “The Evolution of Project Management” will address this shift from tactical to strategic project management. In this conference, we will explore what this means and how we can prepare ourselves for these new challenges.

Our keynote speaker, David Houle, is a futurist, advisor and speaker, who is always slightly ahead of the curve. In his keynote, “Leading and Succeeding in the Transformation Decade”, David will look at the Transformation Decade and the incredible changes that are and will continue to occur between now and 2020. He examines the rapidly changing workplace to explain why project management will become the dominant corporate language and which qualities of leadership and management will be essential for success.

Prioritizing the Value of a PMO

A study done by the Project Management Institute (PMI) revealed that the longer a company had a PMO in place, the better their project success rates were. Their findings showed that 37% of companies that had a PMO for less than a year reported increased project success rates. Companies with a PMO for four years or more had a 65% increase in their project success rates. Don’t treat your PMO as a top-secret international space mission. Learn important PMO performance drivers, prioritize the drivers through the lens of a stakeholder and share the benefits with the organization.

Charlene joined Cheetah Learning to promote energy self-sufficiency and overall sustainability techniques and training offered in the Cheetah curriculum. Reward & Retention

“What Can I Do? (And Can I Afford It?)”

We all need to hire good people and to keep the good people we’ve got. Study after study tells us that we can still expect a dramatic labor shortage in the next five to ten years despite the current economic condition. As the boomers retire and fewer people enter the workforce to take their place, it will become increasingly harder for organizations to satisfactorily staff to meet the demands of the market. Money will only go so far in attracting and retaining talented staff. But there are a number of other steps we can take to keep our best employees, and most of them don’t cost a cent.

What Can I Do? (And Can I Afford It?) outlines proven techniques to reward and retain valued staff, and ways to make more of your employees assets to your organization. Implementing these five steps can stem turnover and reward your top performers. They will make recruiting easier and less expensive, as the best talent will be looking for you.

    KeyTopics
    • Low or no-cost tactics managers can use to reward staff.
    • Retention starts at orientation.
    • The role of training in retention.
    • A manager’s greatest tool to stem unwanted turnover.

    Speaker: Ron Katz

Ronald M. Katz, SPHR is the president of Penguin Human Resource Consulting, LLC and author of the recently published “Someone’s Gonna Get Hired…It Might As Well Be You!” as well as numerous articles that have appeared in national HR magazines. He’s spoken nationally on human resource issues and his inspirational presentation style has proven effective with seasoned professionals as well as newcomers to the workforce. Using real workplace stories he helps managers see the value in working with people instead of simply managing them.

Ron consults and trains on performance management, staffing, diversity, sexual harassment and fostering intergenerational harmony. He recently served as the Interim Director of Learning & Development for Societe Generale. Previously, Ron spent eleven years at JPMorganChase, most recently as Vice President in Employee Relations Training. In this role he created and delivered training on Employment Law, Effective and Legal Interviewing, Sexual Harassment Awareness, and Performance Management.

Ron is an adjunct instructor at the Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations for whom he has designed and delivered numerous programs for over 15 years. Since starting his own consulting firm he has consulted with some of the largest organizations in the world on human resource and management development issues.

He volunteers his services leading a Job Support Group for people who are unemployed, starting out or starting over near his home in Westchester County, NY.

    Proper Project Leadership

In today’s project teams, all team members are encouraged to give ideas and make decisions. Today, we need not only the Project Manager, but all team members, to take on leadership roles and move the project forward. This is not always easy and is made even more difficult with organizations that have strong governmental, military, or other influential bureaucratic drivers which can complicate the projects.

Please join us for an evening of discussion on proper project leadership and how to create project decision makers, and the best ways to give proper leadership as you are setting up a project team.

Behind the Front Lines: Building Emotional Intelligence in Kabul

Is there a correlation between leadership success and Emotional Intelligence across cultures? Can efforts to develop the Emotional Intelligence Quotient ("EQ") of individuals impact the overall performance of a team... or the outcome of a project? In this presentation, Christa will interweave theory with methodology, stories and photos, bringing to life experiences from her most recent trip to Kabul in April, 2011.
The focus of this case study is a USAID-funded long-term project with a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) in Afghanistan. Christa will guide you through an intensive training workshop she designed to help unite two separate and competitive groups - operating under the same "parent" NGO - into a cohesive, collaborative team. Incorporating insights from Hofstede's Cultural Dimensions Theory, this presentation will also explore recent research on Emotional Intelligence within a global business context.

Speaker: Christa Kirby, Vice President of Global Communications at International Institute for Learning

Christa Kirby is the Vice President of Global Communications at International Institute for Learning. With a BA from Duke University and an MA from New York University, she is an experienced Communications professional as well as a Licensed Creative Arts Therapist and trainer. For the past decade, Christa has conducted workshops and led trainings for corporations, non-governmental organizations and foundations in countries including Afghanistan, Bosnia, Croatia, Romania, Ethiopia, Greece and the US. Her specialty areas of focus are team-building, leadership, conflict resolution, effective communication, cross-cultural communication and peace-building.
